Creating a green community

Care about sustainability? Get involved!

O'Kane Park is Lakewood's newest sustainable neighborhood. We have several initiatives we need your help getting off the ground.

About Sustain O'Kane

The O'Kane Park Neighborhood is part of the City of Lakewood’s Sustainable Neighborhoods Program, which gives residents the opportunity to become active partners in making Lakewood a vibrant and sustainable community.

Sustain O'Kane partners with City staff to organize workshops, projects and events to make our community a more sustainable place to live. Anyone is welcome to contribute their own ideas and attend all events!

Upcoming Events

Join us at Sustain O'Kane for a series of exciting and enriching upcoming events, where we celebrate sustainability, community, and the beauty of nature. Mark your calendars and get ready to embark on a journey that will inspire and empower you to make a positive impact on our planet.

Current Initiatives

Several neighbors joined together in late 2020 to brainstorm the most impactful initiatives that would serve our unique community as areas of focus for the upcoming months. We need leaders, support volunteers as well as wanting to gauge interest in attending certain events. Please take a few minutes to fill out our interest survey to let us know how you would like to get involved.

Create a bee safe neighborhood
Launch the Bee Safe Program in our neighborhood and create an environment that is safe for bees and other pollinators.

Community need and connection
Create programs to help those in need in our neighborhood. Projects/topics that were identified to work on include - food insecurity; "buddy" programs (ex. snow buddies); addressing loneliness; identifying ways to help the homeless in the neighborhood.

Reduce, reuse and recycle
Educate the community on ways to divert waste from the landfill. Initially, this team will focus on creating a recycling resource list. In the future, the group will organize events to collect hard-to-recycle items and host workshops to educate residents on how to reduce waste and reuse items in the home.

Composting
Identify opportunities to learn about backyard composting and make curbside composting available in the community. Projects discussed include a composting coaching program, composting workshops and curbside composting.

Bicycle education
Provide opportunities for the community that encourage bike riding for fun or as a mode of transportation. Proposed projects include neighborhood bike rides, a workshop on bicycle safety, and bicycle maintenance demonstrations.

Energy
Create opportunities for residents to save money and help the environment by participating in energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.

Outreach and communications
Develop and maintain a strong outreach plan for the Sustain O'Kane team. Provide assistance managing outreach channels and identifying new ways to get neighbors involved.
